The gemstone August’s birthstone is garnet, which has traditionally been associated with regal qualities. Garnets are often thought of as representing strength, endurance, pride, and leadership. According to popular belief, the origins of the symbol of August began when a Roman goddess, Juno, turned a stone into an eye. Through the centuries, this stone, called the Eye ofugal, has come to symbolize the power of the leader, or trait, which is the ability to see clearly and make wise decisions.

The second element associated with this gemstone, which also helps to define it’s meaning, is the color of deep amber. This particular shade of amber has also been associated with the Roman goddess Jupiter, as well as the goddess Venus, the planet Venus being associated with the month of August. According to popular belief, Venus, the goddess of love, was searching for a lover who would fulfill her needs, and Jupiter, the planet of the sky, needed to find his next prey. This connection became the source for the standard symbol of August.
